Why did I choose this major?
My understanding of Digital Communication Arts is a study of web design, graphic design, animation, illustration, image manipulation, creative writing and more.
This is a very comprehensive and appealing major which is, in my opinion a very important skillset to have in this technologically advanced age. I often see young entrepreneurs who are successful
and have applied these skills, which I am yearning to acquire. There is a great deal of information and classes available on-line to do a self-study, however, there is something to
be said about learning this in a structured and formal setting with peers. I believe, with a strong instructor and teamwork, the experience will be more enjoyable and more impactful.
I have always been impressed by my uncle who has run his own website from the time he was in high school. He sells products and owns several blogs that people follow.
I would like to have those skills and use my skills and strength for purposes that are important to me.
What is the intent and/or purpose of the artwork I included in this portfolio?
Photos:
I have included three photos of our recent trip from Los Angeles to San Francisco. All my pictures are those of geographic features that inspired strong emotion in me. My first picture is that of a mountain on the Pacific Coast Highway that was cut to make space for the highway.
When I saw that cut mountain, it made me think of an elastic mountain that was stretched out and evenly textured. I had never seen anything like that before and it made me desire to feel the texture of the rock.
My second photo is the Pacific Ocean on the side of Pacific Coast Highway, a little past Malibu. This photo is my favorite because if you look closely enough you can see a line of birds in flight. I love the change in the ocean color from an aqua blue green to a grey in the distance, matching with the grey overcast sky
My last picture is that of the Santa Ynez Valley, north of Santa Barbara. This photo shows the almost painted smooth mountains. I remember distinctly falling in love with the almost unreal views
and the visible foreground, middle ground, and background. In the foreground vegetation and green is seen closest. In the middle ground you see the large mountains that appear brightest in the picture, thought they are seen farther than the vegetation.
In the background there are more mountains that appear darker and more distant than the brighter mountains in the middle ground.
Poetry:
My first poem, "Elevator Melody" is a free verse poem about the power of chance. This poem was inspired by my experience of meeting someone new and feeling a connection.
My second poem, "The Unbroken" is also a free verse about the friendship between two opposites. This poem was inspired by the recognition of knowing of how people can be different and alike at the same time.
I included these poems to demonstrate my ability to convey a story in a simpler and yet more elegant form.
Creative Writing:
My first piece is called 'Those of Golden Blood' is a medieval fantasy about a faerie who loses her title and after hardship is able to regain her title.
My second piece is called ‘The Magic of a Pen’. This piece is set in current times and is about a girl passionate about drawing in which her aunt motivates her to pursue her dreams of getting into an arts school,
I included these two pieces to demonstrate my ability to convey stories in a clear and engaging way.
Why does this major at Cab appeal to my artwork or me?
I am very curious and interested in web and graphic design. I am yearning to formally develop these skills so I can use these for my personal use and prepare myself for jobs. I am also very passionate about poetry and would love to learn how to better manipulate words so I can express myself with more clarity. Photography is gaining my attention, and I would love to develop my talent and knowledge.
What are my career goals after High School?
I hope to intern as a web and graphic designer at a well-known company. I would also like to volunteer my skills at a local non-profit organization. After interning and volunteering,
I would like to continue with college in a similar discipline. My end goal would be to work in Silicon Valley.
